Does Negotiation Have to Be Adversarial?

Many people think of adversarial situations when they think of negotiations. It brings to mind a hostage crisis, negotiating the terms of a divorce or bankruptcy or it brings up salary negotiations when you are getting hired or looking for a raise. Situations that make us uncomfortable and at odds.

But does negotiation have to be adversarial or uncomfortable?

Law Professor Alex Carter says, no, it doesn’t. She teaches negotiations at Columbia Law School and she’s trained thousands of people all over the world including diplomats at the United Nations.

Her viewpoint, “Negotiation is any conversation when you are steering a relationship.” How did she come to that?

It all started in a kayak. Her entire perspective changed when she was in a kayak on her honeymoon and the guide told her to “negotiate” her kayak to the left. Negotiating was all of a sudden about steering. She then likened that to steering a relationship.

You can learn more about her views and advice on negotiating on April 6th at TEDxReno but we have another opportunity for all the women out there that want to learn how to improve their negotiation skills.

Ask for More:

Announcing 🎉 our first TEDxReno Salon!

Featuring Alexandra Carter, Award Winning Negotiator and author of Ask for More: 10 Questions to Negotiate anything.

What is a salon you ask?

Salons are smaller more intimate live events that feature a few of our speakers

A critical element of a salon is lively discussions, allowing attendees to actively participate in the event. With much smaller audiences than a standard TEDx event, salons bring attendees together in more intimate spaces, and with more chances to get to know and exchange ideas as with each other.

Please join us on April 4th for this exciting TEDxReno Salon event.
