Kirstie Ennis’s TEDxReno talk is a moving exploration of resilience and the transformative power of the outdoors. Kirstie, a former U.S. Marine, lost her leg in Afghanistan and has undergone 48 surgeries. Despite the physical and emotional toll, she has used her journey to inspire others, showing how the outdoors can be a powerful tool for healing.
Kirstie’s journey began with the loss of her leg, but her story is far from over. After struggling with her identity post-injury, she found solace in the mountains. The first way she was helped was through a nonprofit that introduced her to snowboarding—a sport that not only allowed her to represent her country again but also opened doors to new opportunities. Competing with Team USA was a significant milestone that reignited her sense of purpose.
Another crucial turning point was her decision to climb Kilimanjaro just four months after her last surgery. This climb was more than just a physical challenge; it symbolized her refusal to be defined by her injury. In addition to reaching the summit, Kirstie raised $150,000 for clean water in East Tanzania, showing that her healing process was also about giving back and finding purpose beyond her personal struggles.

Throughout her journey, Kirstie has relied on the support of her community. Her father’s tough love and the belief others had in her gave her the strength to keep pushing forward, even when the odds were against her. These moments of support were pivotal in helping her reclaim her life and redefine what it means to heal.
Kirstie’s story is a powerful reminder that healing is not just about physical recovery—it’s about finding purpose, connecting with others, and using the challenges we face to propel us forward. She invites us all to imagine a world where the great outdoors is accessible to everyone, offering a unique form of therapy that goes beyond the traditional medical model.
